Wendy Snow
Board Chair
Wendy Snow was born in Peace River, raised in central Alberta and is now a dedicated member of the Drayton Valley community, where she has lived since 1994. Wendy comes from a diverse family; her father is First Nations of Sioux and Iroquois descent, his ancestors having migrated to Canada and mixing with the Plains Cree. Her mother is of European descent, and therefore Wendy identifies as Metis, honoring both sides of her family’s history.
Throughout her time in Drayton Valley, Wendy has always believed in the importance of giving back to the community. She has been an active volunteer in countless capacities over the years. Wendy has served as a director and concession coordinator for minor hockey and as a civilian instructor for cadets. She has also contributed to local schools by being involved in parent councils at four different schools for nearly 20 years.
In addition to her work in education and sports, Wendy has had a long history in local politics, where she worked for 10 years serving her community. She is currently filling an interim position as captain of District 8 in the Otipemisiwak Government. Wendy is the current president of the Metis Local for Drayton Valley and District.
Wendy has also supported other local initiatives, serving as a board member with Lions Club International for 7 years and with Santa’s Anonymous for 10 years. Wendy currently holds a position with the Drayton Valley and District Agricultural Society as Treasurer. She also volunteers with the Drayton Valley Farmers Market to support local vendors and community initiatives.
Wendy shares the same values as the founders of Roots of Resilience Charter School in her commitment to providing education rooted in Indigenous ways of knowing. She believes in the importance of connecting children to their heritage and culture, especially through hands-on learning and community involvement. Wendy’s dedication to sharing her Metis heritage, particularly through beading and weaving metis sashes, aligns with the school’s mission to offer a grounded, relevant education that celebrates the traditions and resilience of Indigenous peoples. This is why Wendy is so proud to be a board member with Roots of Resilience Charter School.
"I joined the board of this Indigenous charter school because I believe every child deserves the opportunity to be deeply connected to their culture and heritage. I wish my own children had access to an education that embraced Indigenous ways of knowing, land-based learning, and the cultural programming that is missing in many public schools. I want to help create a space where Indigenous children can thrive, succeed, and see themselves reflected in their education. By supporting this school, I hope to contribute to a future where Indigenous students have the tools, knowledge, and confidence to walk in both worlds—grounded in who they are and empowered to shape their own futures."
